Story
Malaparte
Casa Malaparte, Adalberto Libera, 1942
Punta Massullo, Isle of Capri, Italy
“Sumptuous lines juxtaposed to asymmetrical flat surfaces for a most dramatic case.”
The Malaparte style was motivated by the minimalist lines of one of the best examples of Modern Italian architecture, Casa Malaparte in Capri. The house was commissioned by the flamboyant and unpredictable Italian journalist, writer and poet Curzio Malaparte and built in 1938 by rationalist architect Adalberto Libera. Completely isolated from civilization, the structure is perched on a thirty-two metres cliff above the sea overlooking the Gulf of Salerno. The house becomes the main getaway for seclusion, devoted completely to art and a cultural crossroad and privileged space for artistic contamination, a place for lavishing roof parties of café society and setting for Jean-Luc-Godard’s movie Le Mépris. A search of solitude and love and an impressive hybrid of classical and modern.
The Malaparte style features a curved silhouette recalling the only non-straight wall, impeccable detailing and architectural sophistication.
